Corporations: just let us regulate ourselves, it’ll be fine…

Also corporations: old.reddit.com/r/youtube/comme

Regulate the absolute living crap out of the these bastards. (But who’s going to when the folks who should be regulating are having drinks with them at the pub every evening and eyeing their next gigs at them?*)

* Did you know Google’s lobbying offices are literally round the corner from the European Parliament?

redditYoutube has started to artificially slow down video load times if you use Firefox. Spoofing Chrome magically makes this problem go away.Posted in r/youtube by u/vk6_ • 9,525 points and 934 comments

“YouTube has provided a statement on the issue … ‘Users who have ad blockers installed may experience suboptimal viewing, regardless of the browser they are using.’

This does not completely explain how the five-second delay goes away when using Google Chrome.”

So a slower experience for those who protect themselves from tracking and oops, it affects rival browsers.

How’s this legal, @EU_Commission?

Android Authority · YouTube is reportedly slowing down videos for Firefox users (Update: Statement)Users are reporting that YouTube has begun adding a five second delay when loading a video on non-Chrome browsers like Firefox. Read on!

@aral @EU_Commission As someone who has experienced these annoying 5s delays I can vouch for the fact that they are still preferable to having to watch crappy ads.

@aral @EU_Commission Video playback is also wonky. Sound seems fine but images are stuttering for me on Firefox.

@aral @EU_Commission Can't read - no "reject all" button and I can no longer be arsed to scroll through cookie popups flipping dozens of individual switches.

@TimWardCam Here's an archive link: archive.is/NSeVS

You can also install Consent-o-matic that takes care of unchecking everything in those popups.

@aral @EU_Commission - and more generally, how is it in any way legal for anyone to try and force people to consume ads? I've said this before: It's the equivalent of publishers back in the print days coming to your house and punishing you for tearing out or skipping the ads in a magazine.

@aral @EU_Commission could you make this same argument against apple for refusing to adopt a modern messaging standard other than SMS at this point? Not only are users who don't choose to own Apple devices loosing QOL features, but both parties are lacking end to end encryption.

Not trying to straw man this, I actually hate that Google is doing this, just genuinely curious your thoughts.

@technotion @EU_Commission Fuck every trillion-dollar company. Please feel free to quote me on that.

@aral @technotion @EU_Commission And by "Fuck" I think he means "Freeze, Unionize, Nationalise and Break apart, Now!", so more like FUNBaN 😅

@technotion @aral 1. iOS supports Signal.
2. RCS is very problematic, see en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rich_Com for an incomplete list.
3. Apple has announced plans to add RCS support late 2024.

@technotion @aral @EU_Commission Apple announced they will adopt RCS last week (to replace SMS). Unfortunately encryption isn’t part of the standard, and it’s unclear if the carriers are willing to update it to include E2EE.

@alextm @aral @EU_Commission wow, that's fantastic news! Can't believe I missed that.

That's really too bad about the end to end encryption not being default... I'd love to learn more about that decision if you have more info?

@aral @alextm @EU_Commission out of all of the possible outcomes, this is one I am okay with. I understand Google did it out of necessity originally (?), but there should definitely be a universal standard moving forward.

This is progress!!

@aral @EU_Commission

Users who have ad blockers installed /may/ experience suboptimal viewing,

while those who don't /certainly/ will 😂
