Apparently Apple’s all-day battery life becomes all-night battery life if you leave your laptop attached to a USB hub without plugging it in.
@aral somewhat relatedly I low key hate that closing the laptop keeps a bunch of things going like wifi and bluetooth and I couldn't find how to disable that. I guess powering the USB port can be useful if you want to use the (closed) laptop as a very expensive power bank for your phone? Wouldn't Mac OS know if there's something charging from the USB hub or if it's safe to suspend its power draw though?
@daaain Oh, no, that facepalm was for myself. It makes perfect sense for the laptop to power things that are plugged in regardless and I do love that everything just always works. I just previously had power going in through the same dongle via USB-C and now it’s via the MagSafe so I forgot to plug it in :)
@aral oh right! Apple is doing some interesting stuff with not charging the last 20% of the battery if you keep it plugged in all day at the same times to extend its life, so theoretically they could do something clever around this, but maybe not such a big and clear cut use case to bother with
