What happens when you watch my BBC Ideas video on Surveillance Capitalism or if you embed it on your own site?

That’s right… you get tracked! And you expose your visitors to third-party tracking.

Isn’t fun?

I suspect those at the BBC would be under the impression that this is the way the internet works.
To not have these "features" would be bizarre to them.

@RunningInCircles @aral

not even a new thing, have a look at this Flickr album (the chap who uploaded it had to wait 30 years before the place was declassified), and they had a commercial agreement with VOA to retransmit their propaganda.

a fair few of their engineers were once bright young things from the offshore pirate radio stations (parallels with todays startup culture...)

@RunningInCircles Well, I just also emailed my contact and said that I would be happy to talk to them about how they can stop perpetuating third-party tracking and profiling. Let’s see what they say and how it goes. No harm in trying :)

@Aral Balkan Great and lucid video! Thanks! Luckily Privacy Badger blocked Chartbeat on my system, but the problem of course remains for those who wander about the net unprotected. Thanks for helping to shine a light on these issues!

If you need it (and do not want to manage some PeerTube instance), I reiterate my proposal to open an account on my PeerTube instance :)

@aral boo! Now is there a way to get the video hosted somewhere else? Hahaha.
