@aral @mdv @element would you mind elaborating on that?

I'm welcoming that governments are using secure FOSS but I can't see where backdoors are involved in your link.

@antifarben @mdv @element I’m not sure who mentioned any backdoors but it wasn’t me. They’re working with the cops. That’s enough for me.

@antifarben @aral @mdv @element
But that's not the choice. "They'd always find someone to work for the bad guys, so I might as well do it" is irresponsible, and leads to very bad places.

Yes, I'd prefer if the FOSS projects in question, and especially those that serve communities, did not help out the cops, let alone actively market themselves out for them.

@thm @aral @mdv @element

1. Actually that is the exact choice. Please tell us which software they should use otherwise.
2. The same applies for other software too. In many countries, police, intelligence services and the military are using Linux distributions, and Python, and XMPP and so on. And some maintainers of free software will just be happy to get some financial support from them.

@aral
Wow this comment sure helps! What would you rather happen ? You're just crying about it and suggesting that... element should not "support" the police ? They'd use whatsapp anyway, so what's your point ? You're just virtue signaling, and I personally wouldn't like for some bloke on mastodon to use my life events as an argument in something unrelated.

Anyway, saying "the police is bad, let's not support them in any way" doesn't help your cause. If you want to see change in the police, this is not the way to go. Vote, protest, but wanting to _prevent police from using a specific app_ ? Again, virtue signaling.
