“The most shocking thing about my time over there was how uncomplicated it actually is,” says Coates, who calls segregation in Palestine and Israel “evil.”

“There’s no way for me, as an African American, to come back and stand before you, to witness segregation and not say anything…”

Coates acknowledges the suppression of those advocating for Palestinian rights … “I have to measure my fear against the misery that I saw.”

@aral the complicated part isn't the system itself, it's *unwinding* the colonization, apartheid, hate, etc. in a fair way. IMO nobody has managed to do this in any formerly colonized countries and I/P is especially complicated because both sides feel that the conflict is existential, and the leaders on both sides are committed to keeping it that way. This makes the discourse toxic when the only shred of hope I see for peace is that "average" people start talking to and hearing from each other.

@aral harder to dehumanize a group when you actually know some of then on a personal level.

@funkyduck @aral We unwound colonists & made peace in Ireland. It was only possible because the EU & US acted as impartial mediators during resolution talks during the 90’s. With Israel / Palestine the US is far from impartial, in fact it’s probably US made rockets that are raining down on innocent Gaza children right now.

@aral For a #writer who claims not to be a talker, this is a wonderfully eloquent intervention by Ta-Nehisi Coates and such a nice change to have a #media outlet like #DemocracyNow that gives room for context and nuance to unfurl! I found it particularly powerful that he has the moral fortitude to understand that “violence corrupts the soul”, and can never be a response, not even to #Genocide. #Israel #FreePalestine #StopBombinGaza
