This definition of the fediverse as including Bluesky is, I think, a good one. But as with Threads, the true test will be whether Bluesky users can follow someone from Mastodon. Frankly that looks more likely to happen soon with Bluesky than Threads, via bridging tech. Perhaps Mastodon and Bluesky will continue to diverge though in use case — personally I love the usenet / discussion board vibe of Mastodon, but I might use Bluesky to consume memes, etc. threads.net/@mmccue/post/DBSmy

ThreadsMike McCue (@mmccue) on ThreadsI think the fediverse / open social web is the sum total of all users running on an open social protocol. Activitypub and AT Proto have the same mission. They’re already being bridged. And the user experiences that evolve here will ultimately be more and more unified. Overall it’s great for the fediverse that both Threads and Bluesky are growing and people are fleeing X.

@ricmac Indeed, I mean you can’t have a proper environmentalist movement without involving ExxonMobil and Shell, after all.

@aral But you can choose to not federate with them if you don’t want to, or join a server that has made those choices. Sure, they may influence the open standards going forward, but how else will this grow so that people move from closed platforms like X?
