Surprise, surprise: In a system that conflates intelligence with profit, Microsoft thinks artificial general intelligence is what you get when you have $100B in profits.
(Yes, you read that right. Yes, it’s absolute nonsense. But then again, so is capitalism in general. Sadly, it’s not harmless nonsense but a death cult.)
“Microsoft and OpenAI have a very specific, internal definition of artificial general intelligence (AGI) based on the startup’s profits, according to a new report from The Information. And by this definition, OpenAI is many years away from reaching it.
The two companies reportedly signed an agreement last year stating OpenAI has only achieved AGI when it develops AI systems that can generate at least $100 billion in profits.”

@aral This is a useful measure.
In 2023 Microsoft profit was 1,762 AGIs
In 2023 the USA federal gov't budget was 10,6 AGIs.
According to Forbes today's Musk net worth n is 4,495 AGIs.
Which tracks very well, as the concept of AGI is stupid, we have a stupidity measure!
And it conforms to the SI units, which already puts it ahead of any measure system used in the US ^_^J
(/me skips over inches being defined in millimeters.)

@aral I guess based on the economic competency and fiscal responsibility of the incoming US administration, in four years inflation will make sure that 100 billion can still buy a cup of coffee or two, so maybe they can get there?
I used to pshaw when people said capitalism was a death cult...but the evidence seems pretty clear. Capitalists will burn the planet, infect us all with covid and bird flu and mpox, they'll cut every tree and mine the oceans dry. They are doing this now.

@aral @jonny technically this is about msfts usage of open ai. Basically they're saying they want a return for investing so much to make agi happen and that theirc mutual goal will not have been accomplished until they achieve agi by definition and generate for msft 100b in profit.
Its still obscene but it's not an agi definition change. It's a condition for letting openai go free. Which is far more bothersome
