I was really excited about the #WebShare, #WebShareTarget, and #BackgroundSync APIS when they were announced, but two years later they're still only supported in Chrome. MDN lists them all as 'non-standard and is not on a standards track'
Does anybody connected to the browser vendor space know the status of these? Are Mozilla and the Edge team against them for some reason? These APIs would be incredibly useful for #PWAs, so I'd be interested in hearing any objections to them
#Chrome67 has support for desktop #PWAs. The browser will show the app install banner for a #PWA and the user can install it to the deskotp. Just like on mobile, it'll open without browser chrome (if the dev configured it that way)
Hopefully, this is the start of a larger surge in PWAs and movement away from #Electron.
@soapdog why do you think #WebPayments will be key?
The lowest hanging fruit I see is news apps where there is no functionality except serving articles. These apps would be perfect as #PWAs. Simplifying their development would be a huge win for them.
Not sure about this headline and analogy; it's not what I think of as an "OS". But worth a read to learn what Ionic are planning - essentially a suite of Web Components to provide functionality built on top of the Web's building blocks. For example, a camera component.
