Is Apple understaffed? Hard to say from outside. Things like Apple Music or the iTunes Store are unmaintained for years. Some Apps like Mail.app are the same every year with minor changes and no bugfixes.
At least the Macrodata Refinement Team is not understaffed. I saw it on television! (It's probably even true since more people work on that show than on these apps)

The only #AppleIntelligence feature I find genuinely useful is the categorisation of emails. But Google has had that for year, and it doesn’t require extensive machine learning models.

Welp, #appleintelligence in the new #iPhone #iOS update has completely bollixed the dictation and #Siri on the phone. The #AI is completely mistaking commands for queries, even offering #ChatGPT to figure out what I am saying. #Apple needs to realize that if non-technical people get a bad impression of their system, they will turn it off and never turned it on again. Why I keep on turning it on, I don't know. In any case, I am turning it off, again.
There’s a failure of leadership here, but I’m not sure it’s the one that Gruber describes. Rather, it’s a failure to gain a realistic appraisal of what current #AI systems are capable of. #Apple is not an early adopter, but an effective populariser of new technologies. This time they may have jumped too fast. #AppleIntelligence
The more serious worry is that the product, such as it is, may be incapable of delivering what was promised in a predictable, reliable fashion. Automation of complex tasks is a central and, in my view, plausible application of #generativeAI. John Gruber is right that #Apple was selling vapourware. But they have a product vision and an engineering plan, which it’s fair to set out to customers in advance. Makes me glad my phone (12 mini) is too “old” for #AppleIntelligence
À propos of the #AppleIntelligence vaporware, I’m actually happy about it and much more worried that #Apple has been gradually losing its edge on software for years.
